On Thursday 4 August at 6pm I’ll be giving a talk and presenting a concert at the Gold Coast Art Gallery as part of their free After Dark series. The topic is music and art and how they can connect at a deep cultural level to express the spirit of a place and time.
I’ll be discussing three solo piano pieces that each have a relationship to a visual art work – my piece Nature Spirit, which borrows a structural idea from William Robinson’s Creation landscape paintings, Chih-Chen Wei’s Between Stream and Hills which is influenced by Chinese landscape paintings from 500AD and Anne Boyd’s Kabarli Meditation (Dawn) which has a connection to Sidney Nolan’s painting Daisy Bates at Ooldea.
Piano music will be performed by Sine Winther and there’ll also be a showing of short music-films showcasing what happens when composers and filmmakers/visual arts get together to make a work. As you’ll see, these aren’t films in the usual sense. There’s often no actors or dialogue. Rather they are kind video clips for art music!
You can preview one right now co-created by myself and filmmaker Rachael Jones (Hong Kong/UK). This is As Small Birds Play.
